Catalan parliamentary election, 2015

The 2015 Catalan parliamentary election was held on Sunday, 27 September 2015, electing the 11th Parliament of Catalonia, the regional legislature of the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia. At stake were all 135 seats in the Parliament, determining the President of Catalonia.
The plan to hold an election in 2015 was announced on January 15, 2015 by President Artur Mas. President Mas said that it was his intention to turn the election into an alternative vote on the independence of Catalonia, with pro-independence parties including the independence process in their respective programs, due to the inability of holding a legal referendum on the issue.
It was the third regional Catalan election in only five years, after the 2010 and 2012 elections, and the first one in which Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC) and Democratic Union of Catalonia (UDC) ran separately, after the dissolution of the Convergence and Union (CiU) coalition in June 2015. It was the first time this has happened in any kind of election since the 1977 general election. Instead, UDC ran on its own, while CDC ran together with Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Democrats of Catalonia (DC) and Left Movement (MES) under the Together for Yes (JxSí) platform, with support from members of the pro-independence Catalan National Assembly (ANC), Òmnium and the Municipalities' Association for Independence (AMI), with Artur Mas as the agreed presidential candidate.
Newly-arrived Podemos, Initiative for Catalonia Greens (ICV), United and Alternative Left (EUiA) and Equo stood together under the Catalonia Yes we Can (CSQEP) label, an electoral platform modeled after the ''Barcelona en Comú'' one. Activist Lluís Rabell was named as the coalition's candidate for the election.
Aside from Mas and Oriol Junqueras, leading members within the Together for Yes coalition in representation of CDC and ERC, all other political parties changed their presidential nominees compared to the previous election. Miquel Iceta stood on behalf of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC); former Badalona Mayor Xavier García Albiol led the People's Party of Catalonia's (PPC) candidacy; while Inés Arrimadas was chosen to replace Albert Rivera, who will instead lead the party into the autumn 2015 general election, as Citizens (C's) candidate.
==Electoral system==
The 135 members of the Parliament of Catalonia are elected in 4 multi-member districts, corresponding to Catalonia's four provinces, using the D'Hondt method and a closed-list proportional representation. As the community did not have an electoral law of its own passed into law at the time of the 2015 election, the electoral system came regulated under the community's Statute of Autonomy rules, and under the Spanish general electoral law (Organic Law 5/1985, of the General Electoral Regime). As a result of the lack of an autonomous electoral law, seats were allocated to districts through specific Laws or Decrees for each election. The common seat distribution is as follows: Barcelona (85), Girona (17), Lleida (15) and Tarragona (18).
Voting was on the basis of universal suffrage in a secret ballot. Only lists polling above 3% of valid votes in each district (which includes blank ballots—for none of the above) were entitled to seats.
